I Just Fell in Love with Marrakech

This ancient city kicks ass.

I've been in this bustling walled city for almost two weeks, absorbing the French/Arabic culture and wandering through an endless maze of stone alleyways that are roads full of shops, cafes, bars, and restaurants. The only things that can pass through them are motorbikes, which are everywhere. Well, carts with donkeys can get through, too.

I hear the multiple calls to prayer and pass street vendors selling freshly squeezed orange or pomegranate juice. The smell of grilled meat floats in the air. The sidewalks are tiny, and occasionally, I walk on the road, praying I don't get run over.

A Mercedes van full of tourists passes, followed by a dozen motorbikes spewing exhaust, and then a cart loaded with vegetables pulled by a donkey clip-clops down the street — this is Marrakech.

Marrakech was founded in the mid-11th century and became the main city in Morocco's central region. Morocco became a French colony in 1907, gained independence in 1956, and is now a monarchy. The people I spoke to said they love the King and give the old thumbs down to the government. Nothing new here.
