My debut book, Living a Conscious Life, was picked up by a publisher a year ago and released into the wild blue yonder in July. If you're thinking about writing a book and getting a publishing deal or just curious about what it’s like, here are a few things you might want to know.

Let's imagine you've signed a contract with a publisher, and your manuscript has been through multiple edits. Like I did, you may have paid a professional editor and spent months reviewing edits and fine-tuning every detail. When it was complete, you said, "Thank God, no more editing! I don't want to look at this manuscript until it's turned into a book.”

Hold your horses, buckaroo.

The publisher will likely want their editing team to review it all again, so get ready for at least one more round of eliminating offending adjectives and tracking down missing commas. You're not quite done yet, Kemosabe.

If you're with an independent publisher, you may negotiate the amount of money you will ante up to help market the book — social media, print advertising, podcast placement, etc. Think carefully about this.
